Why I hate the media, and why studying journalism was a bad choice
I hate the media, and I hate the fact that I studied journalism in college. The media is so biased it's ridiculous. Not even just the news we see on TV that everyone complains about. Take Eastern's paper for example. In the sports section they always have these featured athletes, like an athlete of the week or month or something, and it's usually the big name athletes for each individual sport. You never hear about the smaller players on the teams, it's bullshit. There is so much politics involved in media which is why I never really wrote for their paper cause I just got tired of it all. I hate everything about journalists and the way they think. Don't get me wrong though, there are some really good writers out there, but in general, journalists are as scummy as we perceive them to be.
The main thing that pisses me off about media is the phrase "If it bleeds, it leads". Wow, that's a great standard to live by. The way we use death, violence or anything with a shock value to get people to read newspapers or tune into our networks disturbs me. And the way people love to hear about all the fucked up things in the world more than less shocking things also disturbs me. Our society is so fucked it baffles me. The most recent example of this is the NIU shooting. The media has been all over it and society has been eating it all up. Next month, you won't hear a damn thing about it in the media, I guarantee it. While reading about what happened for the first time on yahoo a few days ago at the end of the story they had a few links about other shootings that had occurred recently around the world. Maybe three or four of these links, and this was the first time I had heard about them. Why? Because it wasn't in this state or maybe not as many people died in these shootings at schools, so the media doesn't find it significant enough to report on here in the Chicago area. How messed up is that? And of course they had to mention what happened at Virginia Tech last spring. Oh and lets talk about the Jena Six. Jena Six? What's that? How come that's not in the news anymore? Because the media doesn't want it to be and nobody cares enough for the media to want it to be...Yeah, being a journalist is great...
The reason I am not going to pursuit anything in journalism is because of how much bullshit goes on behind the scenes. You think the media has bias in it right? Well, you're absolutely right. Journalists aim to tell the truth, have no bias, and be objective. That's pretty funny considering that a paper will put out what they want to put out and they will report on what they want to report on and leave things out that go on in the world just because it might not be as important to everyone as a whole as opposed to the significance it may hold to a small group of people.

Northern Illinois (The Hypocrisy of America)
:::DISCLAIMER:::
I am not trying to offend anyone with this, it's just how I feel.
I am not trying to offend anyone with this, it's just how I feel.
I love how when a tragedy strikes everyone is all "pray for this" or "pray for that". For ezample, the sales of American flags after 9/11 were ridiculously high. If you're going to support something, support it all the time, show your pride all the time, don't just support or show pride in something when a tragedy occurs. This also happened with Virginia Tech with the shooting last year and it's going to happen now with the shooting from Northern Illinois. So many groups along the lines of "Support Northern Illinois" will be created now, and people will join, but I give it a month before half the people who join those groups leave them because they are causing too much clutter on their facebook. It just goes to show you how hypocritical society can be.
Also, I'm sorry for those who died, and for the families who have lost anyone. I don't understand shootings. If someone's life is that messed up, take your own life if you have to, but don't take the lives of the innocent. I don't understand it.
